Etched in Time 1/41. ‘Temptation’ – New OrderWhen this song was released I was 16 years old and I remember playing this song over and over on a record player I shared with my brother. What drew me to this song was that despite the melancholy, the song is uplifting rather than despairing. It captures the exhilaration, vulnerability, and possibility of a full life ahead.

Etched In Time 2/42. ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ – Echo & The BunnymenI was 31 when this song was released. At the time I was starting to build a successful career in finance, exploring the world and deepening friendships and relationships. Nothing Lasts Forever is about finding beauty, meaning, and love in a world where everything is temporary.

Etched In Time 3/43. ‘If Death is not the end’ – Robyn HitchcockI first came across this poem during the Covid lockdown in 2020 aged 54. Robyn Hitchcock’s poem “If Death Is Not the End” is, paradoxically, less about death than about the extraordinary and fleeting nature of being alive.  Life is portrayed as a force that cuts through us, transforming us, bringing love, wonder, loss, ageing and eventually death. We are participants in a process much larger than ourselves.

Etched In Time 4/44. ‘The Waste Land’ – T.S. EliotAnd now we come full circle. I first came across this poem while studying A Level English Literature aged 16. This dense profound poem stuck with me all these years but picking this up again aged 60, I can see new layers and new meaning especially against the context of an unstable world. The Waste Land explores themes of loss, disconnection, mortality, and the search for meaning in a fragmented world. Amidst its atmosphere of spiritual and emotional desolation, it holds onto the fragile hope of renewal and transformation.
